FAQs

What Is the Valley Range Energy Park Project?

Valley Range Energy Park is a proposed 125MW Solar Energy Generation Facility collocated with a 62.5MW  Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) sited in the unincorporated area Montezuma County outside the City of Cortez. The Project will generate cost-effective solar electricity and store low-cost grid energy to be used when prices are otherwise high, helping to reduce costs for families and businesses.

Valley Range Energy Park is a resilient, clean and cost-effective solution to an increasing demand for reliable domestic energy. The Project will assist in building on a strong track record of serving customers safely, reliably, and affordably. In addition, the Project directly supports Colorado’s goal to supply 100% of electricity sales with zero-carbon resources.

Why Is The Valley Range Energy Park Project Being Planned In Montezuma County?

Valley Range Energy Park is strategically located on the grid to minimize resulting transmission upgrades, optimize energy delivery, reduce congestion related price spikes, and deliver cost savings to families and businesses. The site selected for the project was based on a comprehensive review including environmental issues, design constraints, proximity to existing infrastructure and potential community impacts.

How Will The Project Benefit The Local Community?

Valley Range Energy Park will provide multiple benefits to the local community including economic benefits, community programs, energy benefits and environmental benefits. Please visit our Benefits page to find out more.

Are Solar Energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems Safe?

Yes. Safety is fundamental to all parts of our electrical grid, including solar energy and battery energy storage, and because the project will be connected to the electrical grid, it will be subject to significant oversight and strict safety regulations that are frequently updated.  The project will be monitored 24/7 by trained personnel prepared to maintain safety and respond to emergency events in coordination with local emergency responders as necessary. In addition, the project will use advanced emergency mitigation and suppression systems where each component has its place and functions to provide layered protection. As a result of these mitigation measures, safety incidents involving solar energy and battery energy storage systems are extremely rare.
